Description:
If the idea of staying in luxury rooms in a former quarantine station doesn't bother you, where diseased immigrants where segregated from healthy locals in the early days of the colony, then this is one very different resort experience. The area today comprises 65 buildings, several archeological sites and spectacular vantage points for viewing Sydney Harbor and the adjacent National Park.
The very word 'quarantine' implies isolation, remoteness. That's true; but equally, rejuvenating, relaxing and unique apply too. After a joint state government and private equity initiative, 21st century guests can choose from heritage or deluxe style rooms and suites, to self contained cottages, all offering privacy and contemporary comfort in what has to be one of Sydney's most unrivaled settings, and only 30 minutes drive from the CBD (much shorter by water taxi).
After the gourmet buffet breakfast, guests can explore the headland on a variety of flora/fauna or aboriginal heritage tours, indulge in massage therapy, swim or kayak at harbor beaches, dine in the Boilerhouse restaurant, relax with a book, even go searching for ghosts at night with a trained medium. When was the last time you stayed anywhere that offered such interesting and varied activities?
Recognizing this as much as the sensitive, sympathetic conversion from an abandoned government quarantine facility to a world class historical resort, Q Station was runner up in Gourmet Traveller magazine's 2010 Travel Awards for Best Australian Heritage Experience.
