The historical sights in Manila are not immediately obvious but they are there and worth looking for. It's best to start with a visit to the 16th century fort called Intramuros, in what is called old Manila, once the heart of the city's Spanish colonial heritage. Its narrow, cobble stone streets are perfect for strolling, but if you are feeling lazy, grab a horse-drawn carriage, or calesa- just make sure to see Casa Manila, the Church of San Agustin, the Rizal Shrine Museum and Manila Cathedral. The information available at these sites is not very in depth however so if you don't know your Philippine history, joining one of the city's tours is suggested. To explore by foot, try "Walk This Way" Tours, which specialize in the country's history from Pre-Spanish time through the Marcos era- the tour guide, Carlos Celdran's colorful insights will leave you wanting to learn more. For those who want to explore by taste buds, try the "Big Binondo Food Walk" of Chinatown, and to learn more about art, a visit to the National Museum is a must. The Philippines today is a mix of Malay, Spanish, Chinese and American influences. Understanding the how and why's of this East-West melting pot, and the meaning of the statement that the country spent "300 years in a Spanish convent and 50 years in Hollywood" - will make any travel experience so much more enriching.
