When the summer heat starts to scorch the Spanish capital, ice cream quickly becomes as much of a necessity as water to keep yourself cool and happy. Luckily, ice cream stands seem to sprout up on every street corner, and small ice cream dishes, cones, Italian-style gelato, Spanish ices (granizados), and ice cream bars await in a dizzying array of flavors. But you should order leche merengada or turrón ice cream at least once, as they are typically Spanish flavors. If you want to hang out, eat ice cream, and look cool doing it, head over to Giangrossi, drape yourself on one of the white leather sofas, order a gourmet ice cream flavor or three, and use the Wi-Fi (it's also a pretty hip place to go for breakfast). Then, a bit out of the way but totally worth it, Heladería Livorno makes old-fashioned homemade ice cream on the premises. On a sunny summer afternoon, Bruin ice cream parlor is a solid plan: it has a good variety of ice cream flavors, air conditioning, sidewalk seating, and the park is just across the street. A popular ice cream chain in Madrid for its central locations, Palazzo is a casual little place to get your ice cream fix in a hurry. When Haagen-Daaz bought the Teatro Calderon it was a no brainer that they would install an ice cream location in the theater, but it has actually become a fun, informal place to go for dessert before or after a night at the theater.
