Description:
Muth's Candies on East Market was opened in 1921 by Rudy and Isabelle "Bell" Muth. Today, it's still a family business, and visitors get a glimpse of Muth's history from the enlarged black-and-white photos of the store displayed in the window. From the two, long glass cases lining the length of the store, visitors can choose bourbon balls, peanut brittle, hard candies, and other goodies, like the "Modjeska". The Modjeska is a caramel-covered marshmallow, invented by a local confectioner, Anton Busath, and named after the polish actress, Helena Modjeska. Busath opened a candy store on Fourth Street near the McCauley Theater, one of the places in Louisville where Madame Modjeska performed in the late 1800s. With Madame Modjeska's approval, Busath created this candy with her name. In 1947, Busath's shop was destroyed by a fire and his son, Edgar, asked his friend, Rudy Muth, to use Muth's candy kitchen so Busath could make candy for family and friends for the holidays. Busath gave Muth the candy recipe after deciding he would not reopen his shop. Muth's still makes Modjeskas today.
