There is no shortage of kid-friendly activities in Louisville: a zoo, lots of parks, and unique museums that are great for both parents and the kids. Whether the family loves nature and animals, sports, or art, everyone will find something fun to do in the city.
The Louisville Zoo offers visitors a chance to interact with the animals, not just look at them. Feed lorikeets nectar, get close to wallabies, ride the carousel or zip line, or play in the splash park or playgrounds throughout the zoo. Glacier Run, a new exhibit with polar and grizzly bears, opened in April 2011. Check the website for daily animal feeding and training times.
Art fans will have fun at the Speed Museum's interactive art gallery, ArtSparks, where children can make build cities out of wood blocks, paint and make postcards, and make colorful rubbings based on designs from around the world. Grown-ups will enjoy the permanent collection and special exhibitions, and after the museum visit, release any leftover energy by exploring the surrounding University of Louisville campus.
Downtown, Museum Row offers sports, art, science and history-learning opportunities. To find the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, look for the giant baseball bat. Even those with the most minimal interest in baseball will have fun on the factory tour. The same applies to the Muhammad Ali Center and those with little knowledge of the boxer - the museum's exhibits are well done and present not only boxing, but information on Ali and civil rights, as well. Finally, both the Frazier International History Museum and the Louisville Science Center offer lots of hands-on activities that the whole family will enjoy.
A fun, offbeat activity that you can only catch on the first Saturday of each month is the show and puppet-making workshop at the Squallis Puppeteers' School of Sharks Theater. All puppets are homemade, and at $10 for admission and the workshop, this is an affordable, unique activity that will leave you with more than memories to take home.
On a nice day, head to Waterfront Park, where kids can run wild on the Great Lawn, explore two playgrounds, or splash around in the water play areas. In the Highlands neighborhood, Cherokee Park offers different walking loops with two playgrounds, a water play area, and easy access to the shops and restaurants on Bardstown Road.
