This piece of art was installed in 1975 and was designed by Joseph Young. The orginal plan involved shooting lasers into space. . . . in the end we got a carillon and 1500 Venetian prisms. The sculpture was refurbished in 2006 and this thing does still put on a pretty light show if you catch it activated. The controls are in the backroom of a Sbarro's in the nearby Los Angeles Civic Center Mall.Incidentlly, that mall dates from the early '70s. Although often only sparsely populated after work hours, the mall is an impressive subterranean concrete complex.
