UCLA is located in the Westwood neighborhood on the wealthy Westside, near
Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and Brentwood, as well as all sorts of cultural hot spots.
Located on the ground floor of the Occidental Petroleum Building just blocks from UCLA is the
Hammer Museum. This facility was built to house the art collection of the former chairman of Occidental, Armand Hammer, following his falling out with LACMA. In addition to the permanent collection, The Hammer usually is hosting a solid visiting feature exhibit of contemporary art.
Nearby is an even grander example of oil fortune turned into in a cultural institution:
The Getty is really something to behold and even a relatively cheap destination (you just pay for parking).
There are number of gardens affiliated with the UCLA. . . . in addition to the the
Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture (on campus) and
Hannah Carter Japanese Garden (a mile north in Bel Air) there is also the
Mildred E. Mathias Garden (on campus).
You know you are close to Hollywood here too! The are 2 great public media centers/archives nearby: the
UCLA Film and Television Archive AND the
Paley Center for Media. There are also a lot of auspicious celebrity graves (Marylin Monroe!) in the nearby (and surprisingly compact)
Pierce Brothers Westwood cemetery.
If shopping is more your style, nearby is the
Westfield Century City mall, as well as the
Westside Pavilion and
Rodeo Drive of Beverly Hills.
