Griffith Park, the second largest city parking in America, adds up to so many different things: it is a
Merry Go Round and a garbage dump, an observatory and an equestrian area, a
zoo and a concert hall. Griffith J. Griffith certainly succeeded in leaving a mark on the city when he donated 3,015 acres of Rancho Los Felis land to the Los Angeles government in 1896.
Its plans for construction set in motion in 1912, the
Griffith Observatory finally opened in 1935. This monumental
Art Deco building and educational science center recently underwent a 93 million dollar renovation and continues to draw crowds.
On the slopes of Mt. Lee on the west side of Griffith Park is the famous
HOLLYWOOD sign. A nice hike along access roads leads to the ridge above the sign, with a good view of the sign and the L.A. basin. There is a fence between you and the sign of course and don't even think of getting close to the letters!
This list collects some great park highlights, but don't forget the
Greek Theatre! This cool outdoor venue is like a more intimate
Hollywood Bowl.
Nearby neighborhoods include a nice shopping and dining district on Vermont Ave in
Los Feliz.
The Dresden is a classic brat-pack bar and restaurant here that just oozes character. . . Also nearby is the
Barnsdall Art Park, home to Frank Lloyd Wright's
Hollyhock House, where interior tours are available Wed. through Sun. (Wright's
Ennis House is also very close to Griffith Park).
To the east and north of Griffith Park are the
San Fernando Valley cities of Glendale and Burbank, site to memorable places like the
Americana shopping center and
Warner Brothers Studios. To the west lie the Valley areas of North Hollywood and Universal City, the latter home of the popular
Universal Studios extravaganza.
