NileGuide Expert tip:
While it is also of general appeal this museum is most likely to be enjoyed by the older generation or students of World War II.
Description:
Set 10ft (3m) beneath Whitehall, the atmospheric Cabinet War Rooms was the bunker complex where Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) and his inner circle plotted the course of British command during World War II. The clocks are set at 16.58hrs on 15 October 1940 and the time capsule effect is heightened by broadcasts of Churchill's rousing speeches to the nation. The exhibit also traces in extraordinary detail the remarkable life of the man widely acclaimed as the greatest British statesman of the 20th century, including Churchill's baby rattle and his trench periscope used on the Western Front in World War I.
