NileGuide Expert tip:

Sadly, plans announced in 2010 for the reopening of the tower's restaurant to the general public have now been scrapped.

Description:

When the Post Office Tower, as it was originally named, was completed in 1965, it was the tallest structure in the land at a mighty 580ft (177m), and the first purpose-built tower to transmit high frequency radio waves. To a whole generation its unusual profile remains an iconic part of the London landscape. It used to be open to the public but was closed on security grounds in 1981 (a small IRA bomb exploded here in 1971) and has remained so ever since. The upper floors included a revolving public restaurant, with wonderful views across the capital.
