The pioneering Langan Hotel (now the Langan London Hotel) has wowed royalty, dignitaries and celebrities since 1865, when it opened as Europe's first 'Grand Hotel'. Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, Somerset Maugham, Robert Browning and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle regularly dined here and the latter featured it in several of his Sherlock Holmes books. A recent £80 million revamp has restored the hotel to its halcyon days including its Palm Court where the tradition for afternoon tea was begun back in 1865 by Anna Maria, 7th Duchess of Bedford. in 2010 the Palm Court was voted the venue for Top London Afternoon Tea by the Tea Guild.
