At 5,268 feet, Katahdin is Maine's highest peak and also the northern terminus of the legenday Appalachian Trail which runs along the eastern seaboard. The park itself contains over 200 miles of rustic, primitive hiking trails (take note: hikers should wear quality, sturdy footwear when coursing through these trails). The Knife Edge trail is one of the most ambitious and takes hikers along a ridge spanning from Pamola Peak to Baxter Peak. The views are spectacular but the hike itself can be daunting with high winds frequently buffeting travelers. The park's other trails are often utilized by mountain bikers and, in the winter, cross country skiers and snow shoers. Several ponds and lakes within the park are ideal for boating and kayaking. A number of campgrounds are openly seasonally both in and near the park. These campgrounds offer everything from backwoods experiences to those with running water and hot showers. For those who enjoy the challenge and joy of outdoor recreation, Baxter State Park should be high on their "must do" list.
