Leeds is unarguably one of the most animated, diverse and fun loving cities in all of England. Located in the west of Yorkshire, the chilly northern breeze is compensated for by the warmth of the local northern folk, and the spirit of the city vibe. From decadent shopping, to fine dining, stunning architecture, world-class museums and amazing nightlife, this city offers something for every whim and wish. Many attractions and diversions around the city are free, making events and entertainment accessible for everyone.
The first place of interest would surely be Millennium Square, which is the principal landmark of the city. Surrounded by some impressive looking municipal building, popular cafes and bars, the square is an endearing space, buzzing all year round with various activities and events. If visiting at Christmas time, the German Christmas market can be found here, selling Christmas treats and gifts, bratwurst and beer Keller. This is replaced in January with a huge outside ice-skating rink, which is great fun for the whole family troop. Just a stone’s throw away from the square can be some other fantastic archeological sites, particularly Leeds Town Hall and the Victorian Quarter of town.
Leeds is also home to many first rate museums and galleries. For those with a taste for historic relics and war stories, the Royal Armories is definitely worth a visit, as it is home to the UK’s national collection of arms and armor and artillery. Although this may not sound like the most of exciting exhibits, the museum puts on events such as jousting, military displays and exhibitions, which can be a great jaunt. Otherwise, the Leeds city museum hosts many interesting special exhibitions, and offers free entrance to all.
For some time out of the urban hustle and bustle, take a trip to Harewood House and Gardens. Whilst only located only 15 minutes out of the city centre, visiting the grounds of the huge stately home feels like a scene straight out of a Pride and Prejudice. Built in the mid-18th century, the building is a stunning stone compilation, and has an interior equally impressive, decorated with Chippendale furniture, and home to a tea service that once belonged to Marie-Antoinette. In the 100 acres of gardens you can enjoy a summer’s day picnic, followed by a lakeside walk, or a visit to the bird gardens, which is full of exotic endangered species. Throughout the year, Harwood hosts events, ranging from vintage car rallies to open air concerts which should be watched out for.
