Museums in Lausanne

Since Lausanne is the official Olympic city and home to the International Olympic Committee is natural that the Committee selected Lausanne to build a museum dedicated to the universal values and spirit of the Olympic Games. More than an exhibition, it has lovely gardens with Olympic sculptures on the shores of Lake Leman as well lovely restaurants. After your visit, you could walk or take a bus down the shoreline to Vidy to the Roman ruins and museum.

One of our most outstanding museums is L'Hermitage, an elegant old mansion up on the hill which has some of the most famous artwork in the world.

Up by the Cathedral you will find more about Lausanne at the Historical Museum and just next door a fabulous collection of Contemporary art (MUDAC).

At the Place de la Riponne in the enormous Palais de Roumine is the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts with a vast collection and changing expositions as well as the Canton Museum of Archaeology & History.

One of the most unique museums that you will find anywhere is the Collection de l'Art Brut with changing international exhibitions of works done by disturbed or marginal artists.

Going down the hill toward the lake is the Museum of the Elysee which has excellent changing exhibitions such as the current one of the entire family collection of photos of Charlie Chaplin who lived nearby.

In a class by itself, near the hospital is the Fondation Claude Verdan with a permanent collection combining science and art which specializes in the hand and the sense of touch.
