The Las Vegas Convention Center hosts thousands of conventions and meetings every year, and attendees who are looking for nearby things to do will find casinos, shopping centers, a museum, and public transportation.
Directly next to the Convention Center, the Las Vegas Hilton is full of things to do. Its casino features a very large sports book with loads of TVs, two showrooms host performers, and it has a full selection of restaurants and bars, including rock star Vince Neil's Tres Rios Cantina.
The Atomic Testing Museum, which is a short drive away, has the unusual mission of presenting the history of the atomic bomb and the Nevada Test Site's role in the weapon's development. Mass destruction is presented in a serious and interesting light and includes Ground Zero Theater, which replicates the experience of being in a bunker during an above-ground nuclear test.
If you like to shop, the Fashion Show Mall is a five minute drive from the Convention Center. The intersection of Sands and Las Vegas Boulevard is a great place to find things to do: The Venetian's Italian theme and shopping mall are fun to explore; in front of the Treasure Island, Sirens and Pirates have regular battles; and the Mirage offers both a tropical rain forest and its famous volcano.
The Las Vegas Monorail connects the Convention Center to the rest of the Strip, although this public transportation runs to the east of the actual Strip. The view isn't much to speak of, but you will avoid traffic jams, and the extra walking from the train station to the Strip can be a good excuse to stop for a drink or to play a few hands.
