Downtown Las Vegas is the best place to find great deals on hotels. The accommodations may not be as glamorous, but visitors can still gamble, drink, and watch shows--at a lower price than along the Strip.
The Golden Nugget is downtown's answer to the Strip. It's got a new pool with an aquarium and its restaurants and rooms are better than most accommodations downtown--although their price reflects that. The Fitzgeralds and Four Queens are neighboring choices that also offer a good value on their rooms and restaurants.
The Gold Spike was recently renovated, and the El Cortez likewise has spiffed up its rooms. With implosion not such a good solution for older downtown properties, renovation has become more common.
Not quite in downtown Las Vegas, and not quite on the Strip, the Stratosphere is on Las Vegas Boulevard, but north of the area commonly thought of as the Strip. The area itself is a bit sketchy, which doesn't invite wandering around the neighborhood. The Stratosphere is the tallest observation tower in the western United States, and its thrilling rides at the top are just what any adrenaline junkie needs.
