Downtown may be where Las Vegas began, but over time it expanded south along Las Vegas Boulevard, that street now known simply as "the Strip." The largest hotel in this area is the MGM Grand, which also happens to be one of the largest hotels in the world. This massive resort has everything a traveler could ask for--world-class restaurants, spa, hip pool club--and a lion habitat to boot.
The Excalibur, Luxor, and Mandalay Bay are linked together via a tram, so staying at any one of these south Strip properties is like getting a three-for-one deal. Visitors can park their vehicle and simply take the tram to enjoy the features at any of these hotels. Across the street, the New York-New York brings "back East," as the locals call anything east of the Mississippi, out West--with a rollercoaster.
While many older properties are gone (the Hacienda was imploded to make way for Mandalay Bay, for instance), the Tropicana has chosen to renovate instead. This may be one of the best values in this area, although both the Luxor and the Excalibur also offer budget prices.
