Visitors who are looking for hotels near old downtown Las Vegas have several hotels in the heart of downtown from which to choose. If you're looking for hotels near but not in downtown Vegas, you can choose from a couple of Strip hotels.
On Fremont Street, the Golden Nugget offers rooms and amenities on par with Strip hotels. A freshly remodeled pool area is their nod to the newest Las Vegas craze for cool and hip pools. Like any hotel on Fremont Street itself, the Nugget's location makes it easy for a visitor to park his car and walk from casino to casino.
Just off Fremont Street, you'll find Main Street Station and the California Hotel. Main Street Station has one of Vegas' better buffets, and its railroad theme is very appropriate for its location close to the old railroad tracks. The California Hotel is a popular destination for Hawaiian visitors and accordingly has an Island feel about it.
If you don't want to stay right in old downtown Las Vegas, a room at the Stratosphere or Sahara will still put you in easy driving distance (walking in this area is not recommended). And while hotels right on Fremont Street have a front-row seat to Viva Vision (the Fremont Street Experience's light show), none of the them have the thrill rides that you'll find at the Stratosphere or Sahara.
