Emerald Bay on the south part of Lake Tahoe is in the most remote area of the lake. The small towns of
Tahoe City and Homewood and South Lake Tahoe are a few miles away, so this area is a great place to get out into nature.
Just south of Emerald Bay is the popular hiking area of the
Desolation Wilderness. In this area you can enjoy day trips or multi-day backpacking trips in the mountains, woods and lakes. Also south of Emerald Bay is
Fallen Leaf Lake where you can spend the day kayaking, biking or hiking and Cascade Lake.
Bayview Campground is near Emerald Bay as well and is a great place to access several hiking trails and waterfalls.
Just northwest of the bay is
D.L. Bliss State Park and Lester Beach. This is a great place to do some kayaking, camping or hiking along the
Rubicon Trail. The nearby
Sugar Pine State Park is another great way to picnic or play, hike or play in the water.
If you want to get a great view of Emerald Bay, take a cruise on the
M.S. Dixie II or the
Tahoe Queen. These paddlewheel boats travel around the south part of the lake and into the bay all day and into the evening. For a bird's eye view of the Bay,
take a balloon tour.
If you want to stay in the bay, visit the
Vikingsholm Castle and the teahouse on Fanette Island or do some boat camping in the Emerald Bay Boat In Campground.
