NileGuide Expert tip:
Kuala Selangor is a 90-minute ride out of the city. The quaint stilt village of Pasir Penambang nearby has many excellent seafood restaurants.
Description:
It's one of the most amazing trips to make from the city. Go out in wooden boats to gaze at the twinkling fireflies that live on the banks of the Kuala Selangor river. Oo and ahh as the fireflies twinkle, making the night look like it's been lit up by countless Christmas lights. There are two spots to head to on the river – Kampung Kuantan or Kampung Bukit Belimbing. Both are on the lower reaches of the river, where mangroves, in particular the Berembang trees, grow thick. The fireflies love to feed on the leaves of these mangrove trees. What you actually see is the fireflies' synchronized flashing green light, a collective performance to attract potential mates. The best time to visit the park is after nightfall at approximately 7:30pm to 7:45pm. Tickets, which can be bought at the site, are priced at RM10/ US$3 per person for a canoe ride along the Kuala Selangor river.
