Description:

Built up after a large fire destroyed much of Drammen in 1866, Bragernes Torg is the river city's heart, as well as the biggest market square in the Nordic countries. In the middle of the square is the St Hallvard Fountain, a memorial to a Viking era hero as well as a refreshing spot. Most of the buildings surrounding the square were built soon after the. In summer, this colorful square bustles with activity. Local farmers bring in fruits, vegetables and flowers to sell. Kids run around while their parents enjoy cold beers or coffees at one of the cafes or pubs lining the square. At the stage, beneath a white temporary roof known as Torgseilet (meaning the Market Square Sail), concerts and other events are organized regularly. In winter, part of the square is turned into a popular outdoor skating rink. In March, the FIS World Cup Cross-country skiing sprint takes place here.
