Waikapala'e Wet Cave
NileGuide Expert Says:
The first room of the cave is intriguing in itself, but the mysterious Blue Room is a unique adventure.
Address:
Mile Marker #10 along Prince Kuhio Hwy in Haena
Kauai, HI 96714
NileGuide Expert tip:
Don't attempt to enter the Blue Room with children, and without a snorkel, mask, and light.
Description:
The Waikapala'e Wet Cave holds an icy cold freshwater pool perfect for swimming. The walk up the hill takes about a minute and a half, and leads to a tall and wide open cave with an icy cold freshwater pool. The trail down into it is a bit steep, so those heading down need to take it slow. Either way, great photos can be taken from the top or the bottom, and for a refreshing and somewhat eerie swim feel free to hop right in.
Behind the main room is the infamous Blue Room, reachable by an underwater natural tunnel that leads to a secret cave. The Blue Room got it's name due to the phenomena that turned the room a bright glowing blue, but sadly many who have ventured to it in the last few years have reported that because of a lowered water table, the room no longer glows blue. The adventurous can still explore it, but it needs to be accessed with caution. Don't take children, and don't head in without a snorkel and mask, and an underwater light.
To get here, drive about three minutes past Ha'ena Beach Park heading north, and look for the trail head on the left side of the road right after the large parking area on the right. If you pass the Limahuli Botanical Gardens you've gone too far.
