Description:
One of a series of caves in the Hanalei area, this one is easily accessible. Located along the road to the Na Pali Coast trail at mile marker 9 and across the road from Haena Beach Park, this cave is worth a short visit for a photo or even a bit of exploration. The sand bottomed cave has an appearance of being a slit in the mountainside with a ceiling that is low enough for most people to reach. The cave is deeper than it is wide and legend says that Menehune dug the cave in the effort to find a fish-stealing god. Although the cave appears to stay perfectly dry, there is no archaeological evidence that it was used for shelter by Hawaiians. This is a fun place to try different angles while taking photos. Look for it on the left just after driving through the river before Haena.
