If you like getting off the beaten track, Jerusalem is THE place to do it. Whether it's stumbling across a historic library in the alleys of the Old City, discovering a remnant of the Roman Empire in front of a Jerusalem police station or finding a cave full of Second Temple era catacombs--you just have to keep your eyes and ears open. Top of the list is the Austrian Hospice in the Moslem Quarter of the Old City. It's one of the most unexpected places you could find off the beaten track, desote its location on the corner of the Via Dolorosa. Outside the Old City, in one of the post-Six Day War neighborhoods, you'll want to take a gander through the trenches of Ammunition Hill to get a feel for the battle for Jerusalem in 1967. Zedekiah's cave is off and under the beaten track! It's a massive quarry that runs for hundreds of yards underneath the Old City. Historians believe that the stones for the Second Temple might ell have been taken from this area.
