East Jerusalem is the place where you'll learn about the layers of Jerusalem history. The first place to go is the Mount of Olives lookout point. From this glorious vantage point visitors can see the Temple Mount and the Old City laid out below, including the natural valleys that surround the ancient city. This is the place that bears witness to many biblical events and you'll feel the special atmosphere. Be sure to get there before noon--once the sun passes overhead it's difficult to see anything if the glare of the sun is in your eyes. Number two pick for things to do in east Jerusalem is the venerable Rockefeller Museum that's home to a host of incredible artifacts from every period in Jerusalem's history. This is most definitely not a state of the art 21st century interactive museum. It's a traditional showcase of some of the most beautiful examples of Middle Eastern culture--and the building itself is a stunning example of early 20th century architecture. Next on the list for great things to do in east Jerusalem is the Ramparts Walk. You'll see things from atop the city walls that you would never see down below. Whether you take the eastern route that takes you from the Jaffa Gate past New Gate to Damascus Gate and on to Lions Gate, or the opposite direction from Jaffa Gate past Zion Gate and on to the Dung Gate, you'll gain a perspective of the Old City that's fresh and unique. Number four on the list is Ammunition Hill, site of one of the major battles of the Six Day War. Here, in the French Hill neighborhood, you'll be able to walk through the trenches as well as visit the museum to get an idea of how and why the battle to reunite Jerusalem took place in 1967.
