Northwood Golf Club

Address:

19400 Highway 116
Jenner, CA 95462

Description:

In 1928, British golf course architect Alistair MacKenzie, already of international renown, moved to northern California and began to design courses in the area. At the invitation of members of the secretive Bohemian Club, who met at the nearby Bohemian Grove, he designed a small but elegant 9-hole course along the picturesque banks of the Russian River. Sadly, the resort fell into disrepair from the 1940s through the 1970s, but now it's been lovingly restored by a local group. Unlike many of the MacKenzie-designed courses in California, which are available to members only, you can play at Northwood for a reasonable club fee. The small pro shop is well stocked, and the restaurant at Northwood has a wonderfully retro 1970s vibe with a big conical fireplace, roughhewn redwood pillars, wood paneling, and a view of the redwoods and the course beyond.
