Eminönü...This is one of those places that you will not miss out on anyhow, as it is already a touristic attraction. However, the ironic thing is that, it is also one of the most artisan neighborhoods of Istanbul. That is, the people living and working here would have had nothing to do with locals and tourists alike, unless they were potential customers.
So, what is mostly on sale at this artisan neighborhood? Spices in the
Spice Market is one. Animals, from cats, dogs and birds to leech, are also sold inside Spice Market. Grain, seeds to grow, Turkish delight and pastry, medicinal herbs, healing spreads, creams (from cellulite to moisturizing) are among the other things one can find. Behind the Spice Market is an open market, which the locals head to a lot for their grocery shopping. Some of the best cheese, olive, nuts and pickles are to be found in this market.
Eminönü can be put on the same day itinerary of Grand Bazaar. The proximity between Sultanahmet and Eminönü's center makes Eminönü unmissable. In fact, Sultanahmet, Süleymaniye, Çemberlitaş and Beyazıt are smaller neighborhoods connected to the main Eminönü district. As such, the walk down the Mahmutpaşa Street from the Grand Bazaar, brings one down very easily -within minutes- to this artisan hub.
