Description:

Craters of the Moon National Monument is an extensive area of lava flows, a landscape created by volcanic activity. The dark lava rock and cinder cones are studded with sagebrush. While the place has that bleak and desolate eeriness--just like the moon--it is full of interest and wonder.

Like many areas of southern Idaho, Craters of the Moon is in the high desert, so the best times to visit are in the spring and fall, when the heat is less intense. Explore the numerous caves under the rock, hike the cinder trails, have a picnic, and drive the loop.

Craters of the Moon is easily accessible from Sun Valley and Idaho Falls, so it's the perfect stop while road tripping through Idaho.
