Visitors are often surprised at the wealth of things to do in Idaho's Capital, Boise. In addition to all the fantastic outdoor recreation, our state and our largest city have much to offer. The
Boise Art Museum, the
State Historical Museum, the
Black History Museum, and the
Discovery Center of Idaho are all located in or bordering Julia Davis Park in downtown Boise. You can spend an entire day exploring the park, walking the greenbelt, and visiting these diverse museums. At the art museum, you'll find local artists as well as nationally touring exhibits. The Historical Museum tells our story. And the Black History Museum fills in some of the holes in that story. The Discovery Center will expand your scientific understanding of your world.
Across the street you will find the
Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial and Education Center. Inspirational quotes and designs make this outdoor monument to the human spirit a must-see.
A few blocks away, the
Basque Center depicts the history of the largest Basque population outside of Europe.
And a few blocks further takes you to the
Idaho Capitol, a stunningly restored architectural and historical piece in itself, but filled with exhibits indoors as well.
Drive down the road to find the
Old Idaho Penitentiary and take a tour. The docents there really know how to tell a story. On your way back into downtown, stop at the
MK Nature Center to learn about the wildlife of Idaho.
The
Warhawk Air Museum will require a short drive, but for the airplane and war history buffs in the group, you will not regret it. Little boys have hatched careers gazing upon the historical planes displayed here.
There are plenty of museums to pique your need to know more, so take a break from the white water rafting or the mountain climbing and step inside to make your visit to Idaho complete.
