The Boise downtown club scene has a little something for everyone, and I mean everyone. If you're young, want to dance and drink the night away, you'll love places like The Balcony, Hannah's, Liquid, Neurolux, the Reef, and Tom Grainey's. Each of these places has its own vibe. The Balcony is known as a gay club, but lots of people go there. It's uber hip. Hannah's and Tom Grainey's are great spots to hear local bands. The Reef is a restaurant as well as a bar, so you'll get people who go for dinner and others who go for clubbing. Neurolux draws all kinds of bands from around the country. Liquid books comedians, and a night out of drinks and comedy is always fun.
If you want a more low-key night out, you might enjoy Gernika, Pengilly's, Red Feather, or the Grape Escape. Gernika is a Basque pub and restaurant. The atmosphere feels like a neighborhood bar in a big city, but the food and drinks are distinctly Basque. Pengilly's has an old west feel to it, and features live music in a lower decibel level than some of the rowdier bars. Red Feather is locally owned and very upscale, great for a special night out. And Grape Escape is a wine bar--perfect for some after work drinks and catching up with friends.
All of these establishments are within a few blocks of one another in downtown Boise, so if pub crawling is on your agenda, this is your list.
