Description:
Today in Hong Kong, the city's newest bar mamoz soft-opened on the top two floors of the "cubus" building at 1 Hoi Ping Road. Previewed last week by Jing Daily, mamoz internalizes the phrase "urban sprawl," covering 5,000 sq ft across cubus' 27th and 28th floors, with floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic views of Hong Kong Island.
Jazz on the sound system, leather on the walls and an eight-meter-long Indonesian timber bar, mamoz looks to set itself apart in Hong Kong's saturated nightlife scene by providing a bit of tranquility amid the high-speed pace of Causeway Bay.
Guests can relax on a hide-covered sofa and sip one of 25 Asian-inspired cocktails devised by erstwhile New York mixologist Marshall Altier, from the Szechuan Samba – an Agave-nectar-infused Caipirinha; Wet Market Smash with Ketel One Citroen, mandarin orange, hibiscus agave, holy basil; and Causeway Cooler with mandarin orange, holy basil and cardamom soda.
Other drinks concocted by Altier call back to the golden age of cocktails, including the Marmalade Cocktail from the Savoy Cocktail Book by Harry Craddock (1930) and the Airmail (1949). Wine lovers can choose from a sprawling list of reds and whites from France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and the US, as well as champagnes from Dom Perignon and Perrier Jouet Grand Brut.
Bottles of wine range from HK$360 (US$46) for an Australian Chardonnay from Margaret River to HK$1,800 ($231) for a Bordeaux from the Chateau Pontet Canet.
A respite from Causeway Bay chaos Both Western and Chinese cuisine are available at lunch time, with the menu going fully Western in the evening. Two course lunches run HK$118 (US$15), with all you can eat dim sum available for HK$168 (US$22).
Dim sum options include twists on old classics, like steamed Angus beef balls, black pearl rice dumpling with gold flakes and steamed prawn dumplings. Western dishes in the afternoon include fish and chips, Angus beef cheeseburgers and fries, and grilled chicken sandwiches on rye bread.
In the evening, diners can choose from simple dishes including bruschetta with basil pesto and goat cheese and pan fried duck liver with caramelized Granny Smith apple. Desserts include old standbys like tiramisu, cheesecake and chocolate brownies.
