Description:
Good places to surf are rare on the east side of the Big Island, but Honoli'i offers good surfing and bodyboarding. On a day with small waves it is generally safe for beginners to paddle out, and there is an inside shore break perfect for children and the true novice. To add to the safety, lifeguards are on duty daily.
Located just a couple of miles north of Hilo, Honoli'i is decent for a dip but not snorkeling. The river water is nice and chilly on a hot day, and children have fun playing in the mouth. There is a small pebble beach perfect for sunbathing and surfer-watching (a popular tourist hobby). The beach has restrooms and showers, and there is a lawn in front of them that is another good spot for sunbathing.
