Description:

One of the city's oldest squares (erected from 1706-1709), Marktplatz is a must-see even if you only have a day or two to spend in Heidelberg. Vendors can be found selling their gadgets and goods to tourists in booths located at the foot of the Heiligengeistkirche, or the Church of the Holy Spirit. Every Wednesday and Saturday morning from April to October local farmers and craftspeople bring their wares to market, though you can find a bigger market on Friedrich-Ebert Square on Plöck. The Hercules Fountain in the middle of the square symbolizes the large-scale efforts needed to rebuild the city after the Thirty Years' War. The market square is home to the city's Town Hall, or Rathaus (1701), a beautiful tribute to Renaissance architecture. On some sunny summer days, the balcony of the Town Hall hosts local musicians, who play their music for the bustling citizens and visitors below to enjoy as they grab a crepe from the creperei beneath the church, or as they sit with their friends enjoying a meal at one of the many restaurants with outdoor seating.
