Description:
The University of Heidelberg is the oldest university in Germany. Established in 1386 by Elector Ruprecht I. it was the third oldest university in the Holy Roman Empire after Prague (1348) and Vienna (1365). Ruprecht aimed to win esteem for himself and his Palatinate government by providing his administration with well-educated men. These days University buildings dedicated to the humanities can be found scattered around the Old City amongst houses, shops, inns and restaurants. The University hospital, science departments, and School of Law are located across the Neckar in Neuenheim, a Stadtteil or part of the city.
