Description:
The Castle Illuminations, or Schlossbeleuchtungen, are a favorite among citizens of Heidelberg and the surrounding areas. Three times each summer, with the help of thousands of fireworks and stunning light effects, Heidelberg goes up in flames to commemorate the burning of the city during the 30-years War, the War of the Grand Alliance, as well as French capture of Heidelberg in 1693. Whether you join in on a gastronomy tour, a boat tour, or stand amongst the majority of Heidelberg's citizens to enjoy the show, the Castle Illuminations are sure to impress. Be sure to stake out a spot near to the river for best viewing possibilities starting at around 9:30pm for optimum enjoyment of the show starting at around 10:15pm. In 2011, the Castle Illuminations will take place on Saturdays, June 4th, July 9th, and September 3rd, each to be proceeded by a free concert in the Church of the Holy Spirit, or Heiligengeistkirche, at 6:15pm.
