South Hilo
One of the more populated moku on the island, South Hilo holds a warm spot in the hearts and minds of Hawaii residents. A small town with a lot of tradition, Hilo has been known as the best Hawaiian town in the islands. Hilo has beautiful waterfalls, one of the largest harbors in the islands along with and lots of small town pride. The town of Hilo has been devastated by tsunami and been threatened by lava flows from Mauna Loa in the past. Today, this small windward coastal town still has close knit community along with the modern conveniences that include several big box stores and a rather large under utilized airport. Hilo is also known for the lush landscape, tropical flowers and rain. Metal roofs are the preference here since rain along with high humidity are more the rule than the exception. The cloudy weather continues north along the coastline where there are gorgeous ocean views that include rocky shorelines and dark sand beaches. The area boasts more than one botanical garden and amazing eucalyptus forests
