NileGuide Expert tip:

If you are carless, take a Transière bus terminating at St. Marcellin or Valence. They have a stop near Le Grand Séchoir.

Description:

Le Grand Séchoir (the big drying house) recounts the history of the Grenoble walnut, France's first fruit to benefit from the AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) label.

Located at the heart of a walnut orchard, Le Grand Séchoir takes visitors on a journey to meet the people behind one of Grenoble's most famous culinary products. The museum itself is in a renovated farmstead, with an authentic drying area. Driving around the Grésivaudan and southern Grésivaudan valleys, you can still see a few operational drying houses, with their characteristic wood-slat sides.

Visitors to Le Grand Séchoir can listen to recordings of walnut farmers tell about their lives, discover the old sorting tools, many of which are still used today, and learn about the way of life that went with walnut harvesting.
