A veritable local legend. Eat outside if the weather is nice, as the inside is rather dark.
Description:
Le Tonneau de Diogène (which translates to "The Cask of Dionysus") is one of those humble restaurants that everybody goes to for its reliably correct food and prices. They serve meals from open to close, which consist of French classics like
croque monsieur,
steak-frites, and
They always have a three course menu for around 8 euros. It's nothing fancy--perhaps a small salad, roasted chicken and potatoes, and fruit for dessert--but it gets the job done and is never disappointing. More sophisticated palettes can enjoy local specialties like
diot or
andouille sausages, mixed salads, and various meat dishes.
Le Tonneau is also a proud philosophical café, with a vaulted cellar underground to get the intellectual juices flowing. Its display window is filled with books from the Sphynx bookstore above the restaurant and the owners regularly organize philosophical debates in grand French tradition.
The servers' level of politeness varies, so don't be put off by an indifferent waiter. On the other hand, some servers are quite pleasant--depends on your luck.
