Cairo Zoo was opened in Giza in 1891, and lies on the west bank of the Nile, not far from Cairo University. It covers an area of around 80 acres, and is criss-crossed with pebbled pathways, water features and rare plants.Cairo zoo houses animals from all around the world, though it specialises in African animals. There is nothing particularly noteworthy here, though the hippo enclosure is fun, and you can get very close to the elephants. There used to be a polar bear at Cairo Zoo, but the most unusual animals now are probably the majestically haughty Bactrian camels.
Most of the animals are in reasonably sized, though uninspiring enclosures. There are some exceptions to this: the lions and bears, for example, are kept in pitifully small cages, and do not look that healthy. The zoo keepers at Cairo zoo can be quite persistent in encouraging you to feed the animals, in exchange for baksheesh.
The Cairo zoo is a pleasant enough green space to stroll around, and your kids will enjoy it, but it is not a shining example of modern zoo management.
