How often are slot machines and card games housed in a structure dating back to the "gold rush" days? For years, Central City and Blackhawk were adjoining mining towns with few tourist attractions outside the grand, historic Central City Opera House. But when the two places were approved for small-stakes gambling in the 1990s, formerly quiet streets were turned into boulevards with well-known hotels and casinos, plus a few independent gambling venues that remain in original town structures. A winding, narrow mountain roadway into the area was replaced by a wide parkway as a safer way to negotiate the mountain drive…and tour buses from Denver make the 35-mile trip daily. Central City and Blackhawk are Las Vegas on a much smaller scale—offering only slots, blackjack and poker—but they hold a much larger charm factor.
