Futaleufu History
Futaleufu is a very young town, having been formally incorporated as a town in 1929.It's economy has been historically based on timber and cattle, and it relied on Argentina for economic sustenance and trade until the road was built in 1983.
Olympic Kayaker Chris Spelius was among the first people to kayak the river in 1985, when "there was no electricity, no phones, and no bridges." He ran the first commercial rafting trip there in 1986. Over the next two decades, his company, Expediciones Chile, along with several others that would follow created an entire tourist infrastructure around the river. Today, the restaurant, lodging, and activity options are all unique for a town of its size. An international community of river guides lives here during the summer season, and the town has evolved into one of the hubs for adventure travel in Patagonia.
