Description:
Considered Best Local Flair for a restaurant by the folks at Travel Channel, Mangrove Mama's is a quaint, best-kept secret of the Lower Keys.
Plenty of fish, steaks, ribs and vegetarian dishes, Mama's has a straightforward and tasty approach to lunch and dinner. It looks like a colorful roadside shack from the Overseas Highway (US1), but once you go inside, it is funky, eclectic and the outdoor patio through the back doors is shaded by plenty of banana trees and other natives for a cool evening atmosphere.
Start with a vegetable tempura appetizer, followed by Key West pink shrimp rolled in coconut and almonds, then chased by a slice of key lime pie.
On Fridays there is the all-u-can-eat Fish Fryday for $15.95, enjoy mahi-mahi with a side of fries and Mama's slaw.
Saturday nights are the grill-side hog roasts complete with homemade corn bread, corn on the cob and Mama's slaw. You'll drool over the slow-roasted pulled pork shoulder.
Sunday brunch is an array of country, eggs, filet or crab benedicts, biscuits and gravy , or a simple yummy homemade cornbread with key lime and honey butter. Mmm, good.
