El Maiten History
El Maiten was originally an agrarian village, but quickly became a tourism-based economy after the construction of the Old Patagonian Express in 1945. When the rail line was shut down in the 1970s, the town suffered hard economic times which are clearly evident today with large segments of the population living in government housing.
Tourism is slowly on the rise in El Maiten as tourist trips on the "Trochita" or Railroad have begun again between El Maiten and Esquel.
