NileGuide Expert tip:

Because the area is relatively temperate, the snow around the lodge and parking lot often melts during the day, then refreezes at night. Consider bringing mini-crampons or snowshoes, as it can be very icy in the early morning just climbing the stairs / approach to the lodge.

Description:

For those accustomed to modern snow-sports infrastructure, Cerro Perito Moreno might seem like a throwback to ski areas from the 1950s. A somewhat modern chairlift was installed in 2010, but as of this writing (July 2010) has still failed to be put in operation, leaving skiers and snowboarders to continue two sketchy T-bars, the first of which seems built for people less than 3 feet tall.

All of this said, Perito Moreno is special. Those willing to deal with the old-school lifts will find not only some fun (if short) runs with particularly good tree skiing (some old-growth Cohiue forests), but amazing backcountry access. Just off the second T-Bar, (or off the chairlift, once it's operational), a 20 minute hike or snowshoe leads to the meseta, a massive saddle with short approach hikes to various cornices, peaks, and if the weather is clear, views deep into Chile.

The lodge or refugio as it's called is also special. They serve fresh and incredible food all prepared there on-site, everything from pizza and carne asada, to lentil stew, empanadas, and torta frita.

The other notable element of "Perito" (as it's referred to locally) is cost: it's only 40 pesos (or around $10 US) for a daily pass. You can stay at the refugio for 30 pesos--this gets you a bunk bed (bring your own sleeping bag.) 45 pesos and you get blankets and bedding. Bathrooms are shared.

The refugio is open year round, and is a great base for backcountry exploration. You can pay a local remis 75 pesos to take you, or take the Wharton / Encanto Blanco bus (7 pesos) to the end of the line, then continue hiking up the road approx 5 km.
