Description:
Those seeking quality cross country skiing experiences on the Portsmouth seacoast will find much to like about Foss Farm. This University of New Hampshire (UNH) forest research preserve features an expansive network of well maintained trails that are ideal for Nordic skiing. The trails are lengthy and gracefully meander through thickly clustered trees with interesting dips and turns. Backwoods cross country skiing can be an iffy proposition. Snow conditions can range from barely passable to finely packed. But because Foss Farm is a favorite with the UNH cross country ski club, snow on this property's trails is fairly firm with the added benefit of tracking (due to repeated passes by Nordic skiing-equipped students). The result is cross country skiing that has the forested, deep woods appeal of a state park or preserve combined with the feel of a Nordic skiing center's groomed and tracked trails. It makes for a nice afternoon of gliding through the woods on a pair of your favorite (or rented) cross country skis.
