O'Connell Street represents the a cultural and historical centre of Dublin that has seen battles, attacks and a constant stream of Dubliners flocking to this commercial hub since the 18th century. Renamed after the nationalist freedom fighter Daniel O'Connell in 1924, you can see the man of the same name presiding over the O'Connell Bridge leading onto the south side of the city.
During the Easter Rising of 1916 the rebel forces stormed the General Post Office and proclaimed the Irish Republic, which led to artillery forces causing massive damage to both O'Connell Street and its environs. The boulevard is now a commercial hub with the iconic Spire punctuating its centre.
The clock at the famous Clery's department store represents a long-time meeting point for Dubliners and country folk alike before embarking on a day of shopping. Nearby Henry Street and Moore Street are perfect to get a taste of true Dublin shopping.
