Description:
The portion of the Salmon Falls River flowing between Rollinsford, NH and South Berwick, ME is a little known waterway that has much to offer for outdoor water enthusiasts. The falls is one of the most scenic portions of the Salmon River, which courses between the border communities of New Hampshire and Maine along Route 4. The Foundry boat launch in Rollinsford, located on Foundry Street directly across the way from the American Legion, offers easy access to this section of the river for boats, kayaks and canoes. Traveling the river is a languid, gentle experience. Most of this waterway features slow moving currents that enable boaters to view waterfront properties and enjoy the lush, rich greenery of the shoreline. Local wildlife, especially shore birds, adds to the scenic experience. Heading east, you will come upon the Route 4 bridge and, beyond it, South Berwick's Counting House Museum and park. It is not recommended to go beyond the bridge because of the active waterfall just beyond the park itself. Traveling west toward New Hampshire, you will eventually come upon the Falls themselves – the highlight of this journey. This landmark consists of water busily rushing down and spilling over multiple layers of rock and boulders situated just below Rollinsford's distinctive mill complex. Because the waterfall is far weaker than when it powered the town's mill industry, it is possible for kayakers, in particular, to paddle right up to the base of the falls for a truly compelling view. Those who prefer dry land can get a good look at the falls from vantage points at nearby Salmon Falls River Park in Rollinsford. When visiting the New Hampshire seacoast, don't overlook this unique waterway – especially if you are a paddling enthusiast.
