Description:
Inner city Darlinghurst, as an entertainment suburb, just about has it all. Cheap and nasty; chic and expensive; old vs ultra modern, loud vs laid-back, and pretty much everything in between. That's part of the neighborhood's longstanding appeal. Then there is The Victoria Room. You walk up the wide stairs from the street and are utterly blown away by the space; it's not what you expect at all, with its dark wood floors, piano, elegant studded leather lounges, decorative screens, sumptuous brocaded furnishings, patterned wallpaper, potted palms. It's the British Raj meets a private gentleman's club.
The space is large, yet feels discreet, with clever lighting and designated bar and dining areas. Start with a cocktail from a very long, luscious list in one area, then move on to a Mediterranean influenced menu in the other. Think stuffed Spanish peppers, spicy Moroccan meatballs or fried haloumi.
But this is a venue for all seasons, and all occasions, not just an evening or late night hang out.
Consider High Tea on weekend afternoons - until 5pm. Or late suppers served Friday and Saturday nights for those after show, post movie munchies (cheese and tasting plates, antipasto or the signature chocolate fondue) - 11pm-2am.
On Sunday night, a Performance Carnival kicks in from 6pm, where you're likely to be entertained by an aerial act one week, a Nat King Cold jazz trio or guest DJs the next.
