There are heaps of cheap restaurants in Dallas. You can fill up without busting your budget when visiting Dallas. A popular dining spot, Po Melvin's dishes up excellent Louisiana Cajun home cooking at reasonable prices. Don't look too hard in the oversized aquarium for the "invisible fish," as the sign suggests, they tend to be difficult to see. Set your sights on the spicy roast beef or the hand-breaded chicken fried steak dinner. Jalapeno cornbread, a favorite, is moist and spicy and has chunks of corn mixed throughout.
Check out the Ali Baba Café. Family-owned, Ali Baba draws crowds for its good, cheap Middle Eastern food. Don't be surprised to find a line of customers clamoring to get in. This plain, tiny place packs them in for great rich hummus, marinated beef, grilled chicken, falafel, and Syrian and Lebanese dishes like stuffed kibbe. The tabbouleh and signature rice dish, made with vermicelli and sautéed in seasoned olive oil, are standouts.
Visit the La Calle Doce Restaurante. This Mexican joint, in a modest old blue house in Oak Cliff, has been one of the best home-style Mexican restaurants in the area for more than 25 years. A cult favorite, it deserves to be much better known. The extensive menu focuses on Mexican fish dishes, such as superb ceviche, Mexican seafood cocktails, mahi-mahi tacos, and other main courses such as chile relleno de mariscos. The margaritas are among the best in town. Dig into these good, cheap Dallas restaurants without burning a hole in your pocket.
