Outside Copenhagen
Getting away from the hustle and bustle of a downtown capital isn't hard in Copenhagen. Regional trains, as well as the suburban S-Train network, make a daytrip out to a lake, forest or fishing village simple and easy, with most daytrip destinations just 30-45 minutes away.
Towns like Helsingør and Roskilde offer visitors attractive medieval centers, town museums, quaint harbors and cathedrals or castles. Alternatively, world-class art museums like
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Arken and
Ordupgaard present art amid serene natural beauty. There are also activity-based family museums, like
Land of Legends Lejre and the
Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, and stately as well as dramatic castles like
Frederiksborg,
Kronborg and
Fredensborg.
Most day-trippers from Copenhagen choose to head north along the affluent coastal road known locally as 'The Whisky Belt' due to the proliferation of palatial, large villas found in the wealthy neighborhood. This area has plenty of fine, sandy beaches, including those at
Charlottenlund and
Bellevue, as well as one of the oldest funfairs left in the world:
Bakken. It is also possible to take longer day trips to Copenhagen. To
Legoland, perhaps, on Jutland, or Funen's amazing castle
Egeskov Slot, or even across the Øresund Bridge to Sweden.
